Small Shoe Talk Radio

Small shoes take heavy, toddling steps
across wooden planks as fingers
connect telephone calls one plug in at a time.

It was the 1950’s in a small town
where everyone knew the cause
of the clatter on the line.

I found my voice early in two rooms
of a dusty brick store building.
I was blond, chattering precociousness.

Warm evenings found me on the front porch
of the telephone office where open windows
carried my voice to everyone making a call.

One ring, two rings, I was on.
I did my own version of talk radio
for each caller holding on the line.

When my folks moved to (very) rural Vermont (1971) they still had a party line. Times have changed, eh?

Great work, SC!

What a fun memory or talk radio days, Susie. And really amazing how far we have come with phones in 50 years!

So cute, Susie... I especially like:

I found my voice early in two rooms of a dusty brick store building.

P.S. I love your new header!

haha on the party line...nice...i bet you felt like a star being able to talk to everyone at once as well...an instant audience...smiles...things like the telephone held magic as kids....my co teacher just the other day was skyping with his kids who thought that was the coolest...

Wonderful, Susie. Images of what seems like another age...how long ago it seems, yet, there you are, part of the story. Technology changes, we change. I think of your mother taking you to work with her; you being near enough that she can keep an eye on you while she completes her shift (perhaps). Life was a bit more casual then. Nice.

What a cool sweet memory..I remember those years and the party lines..and we all got to talk to grandma ..when very young..it was more 'baby talk' ;)
Ha! My son was much the same as the child you describe here. A chatter er for sure. He does play-by-play radio for high school basketball now. I tell him he's a natural!
Love this!

You know how to make us smile with your memory...a happy one. Refreshing to have a child as a talk show host, heh? It might do us some good right now.

Takes me back. I grew up in the 50s and 60s. Party lines on the phone made life interesting and talk radio was the best.
