Mama I Miss You

Mama I sat and looked at you
wanting to scream
please remember me,
come back from that
horrible land of unknowing.
Your tears broke my heart
as you looked at me
not recognizing my face.

I couldn’t help you find home again.
It was a place in your mind
where I could not travel.
Today was not real to you.
You were lost in the past.

I didn’t know that September day
would be the last time
I would hear your voice
or hold your hand,
feel your arms around me.

Mama I miss you.
Sometimes I feel like
that little girl
you were searching for,
wanting you to kiss my forehead
and tell me everything will be fine.

Susie, I read your poem and also listened to you read it. It is so poignant, sad, real. So sad when someone one loves (mother or whoever) does not recognize you and you don't really know 'where' they are. I think of all the poems I have read by you, this one wilol stay WITH me. I pray that in our lifetime they will find a cure.

Susie, I think what I enjoy most about your poetry is the depth of emotion that you are capable of expressing ... without it ever being maudlin.

Oh Susie, this is so beautiful, I had a lump in my throat when reading. It made me think of my grandma who was actually my mother at least I consider her so because she raised me. She passed in May of 05 but she stays with me everyday. Alzheimers is such a sad thing, so I hear. I am sorry.

Love always.
Kellie

P.S...you should so share this in the Open Mic on Sound Cloud! :)

Susie this is beautiful...our relationship with our mother is such an important one in our lives....I am so sorry for your loss, this is a lovely tribute to the love you have for her.
My heart aches... every word of this I can so relate to, but to my Dad... who I miss dearly. My prayers for strength and comfort my new sweet friend...

Awww this is such a sad thing. Dementia or Alzheimer's is so sad for everyone not just the person affected, it's so hard on their family and friends too.
I feel your pain and sadness in every line.

What a beautiful, heartfelt, and emotional poem. Sadly, so many can relate to the painful affects of alzheimers. You've touched many people with this poem Susie.
Ah, I have my own experience of this, though not with my mother. I like above all the simple honesty with which you write of it, and what you say in the final verse.
